Yar, Jacqui and I are learning Finnish atm b/c we plan on making the trip to Helsinki next summer. The sentence structure is really close to english, which helps. The only thing that sux is that the words can get MONSTROUS! lol Is fun stuff!

Really the only thing about Finnish that is similar to English is the fact that the sentences begin and end... Beyond that, with the whole lack of prepositions and such, it actually seems to me more akin to Japanese, from a linguistics standpoint...
The written language has more in common with Russian, and by default, English, of course, but given the fact that the written language of Finnish is one of the youngest in the world, the surrounding areas/world obviously had an influence over how it would evolve... The spoken language however is a whole new can of worms...
I could go on and on about the finer points of linguistics, but I'll just hush here... lol I love this stuff... ^_^

Terve!
Ya, finnish is a mixture of estonian and hungarian...go figure lol. It's really not that hard of a language to learn. The exaggerations/stress points in certain parts of words r kinda tough though. But it's one of the most melodous languages on the earth =).
Kiitos, kippis!

No actually. Hungarian and Estonian are from the same Language root, called Uralic/Urgic by linguists, anthropologists, etc. Hungarians have root words that are similar because the Magyar people are from the same Linguistic and family tree. This Uralic language stretches from the Ural mountains (hence Uralic/Urgic) and has Linguistic niches in Saami, Hungarian, Estonian, Magyar, and more. You might want to take a look at the proto-rootage linguistic history of the Uralic language on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languagesFinnish itself has alot of 'borrowed' words from Germanic, Russian, and even English that have acted to fill in for words that did not quite exist in a Tribal - Nomadic language. All in all? Finnish is not from Estonian and Hugarian. Its related.

Let me rephrase then, it's MOST like the two (According to the only good visual and audio program we could find). But all this is besides the point, it's a fun language to learn and the fact that we are actually going to get to use it is a treat. Although, lol, the Finnish LOVE Americans and would rather speak English, I would hope that they consider it some-what honorable that people outside their country would take the time to learn their native tongue. I wish I could take you guys with me. You guys would prolly not wanna come back lol. HELSINKI-HOOOOOOO!

So, I was watchin an episode of viva la bam and they went looking for raab's wife (lol) and they called up jussi69 from the 69 eyes. They went to Estonia to find the girl and the cool part is that jussi had not spoken estonian much but since his language and it shared so much in common, he was able to make out what all was going on.
Thanks for the link Kat =) There's a lot of linking to different languages that I had no idea about
