As I had said in my introduction post, I used to be a skeptic when it comes to the paranormal. I'd watch shows like "Ghost Hunters" just for entertainment. To me, there were no such things as ghosts. But last September, all of that changed.
It was in September that I started working at Old Salem, an historic site here in Winston-Salem, NC. My job is basically to interpret to visitors the history of one of the buildings there in the town. Mainly, I've been working in Salem Tavern, a building constructed in 1784, and whose most famous visitor was President George Washington in 1791.
The Tavern has its share of ghost stories. One dates back to sometime in the 1780's or 90's. A visitor to the Tavern died while staying there, and was buried in the African American/Stranger's Graveyard. Up through the 1990's, the man's spirit had haunted the Tavern, until one of his relatives had his body identified, and moved to another place. Since then, his spirit seems to have vanished.
More recently, a female ghost has been visiting the Tavern. People I work with have sworn that they have seen her walking in the kitchen. Mainly, they see her petticoats as she walks into the kitchen. Nobody knows who she is, or why she's haunting.
This is where my two incidents come in. I was working in the Tavern back in September. I was standing next to the doorway that leads into the Tavernkeeper's parlor room. I was just standing there, when I distinctly heard a female voice say "hello" from the parlor room. I was startled to say the least. I looked in the room, and nobody was there. I looked outside the building, but didn't see anyone close enough to where I could've heard them real well. It's a hard thing to explain, and this is the incident that has me believing in the supernatural.
Last month, I had another experience while working at the Tavern. I was upstairs putting away Christmas lights (A job that has to be done everyday before we open the Tavern in December), when I heard the kitchen door open, and one of my co-workers yell "Hey, Steven!" I didn't answer, as I was busy. But when I finished, and went down to say hello back, nobody was there! In fact, my co-worker didn't show up for another five minutes! I asked him if he had just been in a few minutes ago, and he said "No, I'm just now getting in." I told him what happened, and all he could say was "wuh-woah!"
Working at Old Salem has shown me that there is more to life than what we can see. And in a way, it also helps reaffirm my own faith in the unseen. Obviously, the spirits working there aren't malicious. I've never felt the presence of evil there, so these spirits are "good" spirits, I believe.
Well, that's about it. I kinda hope that I have more experiences like this, so I can tell you all about it. Until then, take care, and God bless! ;D
In Christ,
